Technology Well Utilized Aids Learning.
Being a great tutor isn’t enough. Today's distance learning is most effective when there’s a personal connection based on trust, variety, and a spirit of fun. My lessons are engaging and individualized, with students of all ages benefiting from the genuine enthusiasm and passion I bring to every session. I love what I do and it shows.
You Have Choices.
There are services and tutoring companies that train their 'educators' using a number of cookie-cutter approaches, many developed originally for in-person learning only. Companies attempt to use these less-than-ideal approaches without understanding the teaching challenges that come with remote learning. My remote support produces results using technology as a learning tool in combination with establishing authentic personal connections. I strive to produce lasting results, and I'm proudly different.
"Technology is just a tool. In terms of getting the kids working together and motivating them, the teacher is the most important."
—Bill Gates
I’m adaptable; what and how I teach is based on each student. (No cookie cutter curriculum.)
Thirty+ years as an educator brings an extensive repertoire of eclectic strategies and effective teaching.
I use a hands-on approach combining at least two of the three senses (sight, hearing, and touch) that enhance learning.
Instruction is individualized and informed by personal learning style—how someone takes in, remembers, and uses information.
Each innovative session incorporates a deep understanding of learning theory and child development that is age-appropriate, enjoyable, and builds confidence.
I share detailed session notes that keep you and other designated professionals aware of what happens in each session.
Reading challenges effect people of all ages. Some students don’t respond to the instruction they are given or may require a different type of teaching. An inability to read grade-level material frequently brings a drop in academic performance. Many older students and adults have their own, sometimes secret, reading challenges. The shame that comes from being unable to read well, or fluently enough to read for information or pleasure can linger for a lifetime. Strategic remedial tutoring builds a solid foundation and fills in learning gaps.
The right intervention brings success that comes from targeted instruction and one-on-one attention that make a noticeable and lasting difference.
Fees: Call me to discuss the hourly rate. My hourly rate includes the delivery of the individualized session (you are not billed for preparation of curriculum and materials, follow-up planning, and sharing of full session notes, an informative upgrade to the brief summary others tutors may provide).
Session Length: Sessions vary in length from 40 minutes to an hour based on meeting the students' needs, and their attention spans.
Frequency: A minimum of twice-weekly sessions are required. Without this minimum, the student will not have the chance to practice, reinforce and use the skills and strategies delivered in each session. Vacations and school breaks are not included in this requirement.
Payment: Unless other arrangements are made, an invoice is sent on the last day of the month. Payment can be made by Zelle, Venmo, or check..
Forms: The Reading Matters Tutoring Contract and Consent for Communication and Document Release forms are both located just below this section in Forms. The contract must be signed and returned before the fourth session.
School Conferences & Meetings: At times, it is useful for me to meet with your child's educational team to advocate, elaborate, and paint a richer picture of progress, challenges, and effective strategies that resonate. These meetings are billed at my agreed-to hourly rate.
I welcome and encourage parental involvement.

"Helen's lessons were clear, purposeful and appropriate to the students’ developmental learning stages. She was always prepared and had the ability to improvise instantaneously based on the needs of the student."
"Helen is technically excellent for working with students who have identified learning differences, especially dyslexia. Her skills, when combined with her empathy, warmth, and passion for working with children, make her a phenomenal tutor."
"Helen taught strategies for comprehension from the most basic to complex level. She succeeded with each of her students because her approach was and is always explicit, systematic, multi-sensory, and fun."
"Helen integrates active and close reading strategies and models techniques that strong readers use when interacting with both fiction and nonfiction texts. She understands the developmental stages of reading, and weaves word recognition, language play, and comprehension into her lessons."
